Working with The Prince’s Trust to improve young people’s lives
Golden Tours is proud to announce that we are working in association with The Prince’s Trust with regards to our new Hop On Hop Off bus tours. The Prince’s Trust helps change young lives. It gives practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation. It works with 13-30 year olds who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. For more information, please go to princes-trust.org.uk.
History
The Prince’s Trust was founded in 1976 by The Prince of Wales, after he served in the Royal Navy. His Royal Highness became devoted to improving the lives of underprivileged young people in the UK, and began The Trust to deliver on that commitment.
- Twenty–one pilot projects were set up around the country when The Prince’s Trust was first launched. Since then, The Prince’s Trust has had an incredible impact, aiding a remarkable number of young people.
- In 1996, the Development Awards were first set up. These were originally one-off £100 or £200 grants, and were shaped to incorporate ongoing guidance and support. By 1998, groups of young people could apply for grants up to £15,000 to develop their own projects in the local community.
- By 2001, the total number of young people who had been helped in some way by The Trust reached 400,000 people. The total receiving sustained help per year reached 25,000.
- In 2009, The Trust launched a new website, achieving over 5 million page views in the year.
The Trust continues to expand with new initiatives and events, changing the lives of thousands upon thousands of young people every year.
What They Do
Around one in five young people in the UK are not in work, education or training. Youth unemployment costs the UK economy £10 million a day in lost productivity, while youth crime costs £1 billion every year. The Prince’s Trust address this by giving practical and financial support to the young people who need it most. They help develop key skills, confidence and motivation, enabling young people to move into work, education or training. They run programmes that encourage young people to take responsibility for themselves:
- The Enterprise programme provides money and support to help young people start up in business.
- The Team programme is a 12-week personal development course, offering work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week.
- Get intos are short courses offering intensive training and experience in a specific sector to help young people get a job.
- Development Awards are small grants to enable young people to access education, training or work.
- Community Cash Awards are grants to help young people set up a project that will benefit their community.
- xl clubs give 14-16 year olds who are at risk of truanting, exclusion and underachievement a say in their education. They aim to improve attendance, motivation and social skills.
To continue this vital work they need to raise £40 million this year. They rely upon generous giving and fundraising from a huge variety of people.
