Edinburgh Castle is the city’s main attraction and is one of the oldest castles in Europe. It is located on Castle Rock, which has been occupied by humans since the Iron Age! Whilst the Castle offers great photo opportunities from the outside, going inside and exploring Edinburgh Castle provides a unique experience!
Known to be the residence of many kings and queens for several centuries, Edinburgh Castle has a rich history which can be discovered during your visit. The ‘Fight for the Castle’ immersive exhibition tells the dramatic story of the Castle during the Wars of Independence. Using immersive projections, animated clips, and a display of medieval objects dug up from within the castle, this exhibition is educational and enjoyable by many.
Visit the Great Hall – a gem of Medieval Scotland. Constructed in 1511 for King James IV, transport to the past and embrace the heritage of the castle. Walk through the different areas of the castle and enter the Royal Palace, where the kings and queens lived. The Royal Apartments are open for guests (the Birthing Room remains closed), so go in and take a look at how the Royals once lived.
Located inside the Royal Palace are the Honours of Scotland – the oldest crown jewels in Britain. The Honours of Scotland consist of the Crown of Scotland, the Sceptre, and the Sword of State. Made of gold, silver, and gems, these significant items date from the late fifteenth century to the early sixteenth century and are now on display in the castle.
